Dessalines, Jean-Jacques

Dessalines, Jean-Jacques
(ca. 1758-1806) (Jacques I)
   Haitian emperor
Born in Grand-Rivière-du-Nord, in what was then the French colony of Saint-Domingue, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, a slave, soon joined the revolt against the colonial rule. Successively a battalion leader, colonel, and brigadier general (1797), he helped, under orders from Toussaint louverture, to expel the British, who had landed in Saint-Domingue during the Napoleonic Wars, from parts of Hispaniola. After Toussaint Louverture was taken captive by the French, Dessalines became leader of the insurgent armies, winning the Battle of Vertières against General Donatien de rocham-beau (November 18, 1803) and proclaiming the independence of the Republic of Haiti (January 1, 1804). He named himself emperor under the title Jacques I, but his authoritarian policies alienated the other Haitian leaders, who killed him near Port-au-Prince (October 1806).
